Our Story

The Complex Patient was founded by Hannah and Jessica Mulein—two complex patients who have spent the majority of their lives navigating the medical system in search of answers. For both, securing accurate diagnoses has been an ever-moving target, shifting constantly alongside evolving medical technology and clinical insights. They built this platform out of raw necessity, transforming their personal survival strategies into an encrypted digital sanctuary for a community that is all too often left behind.

Hannah Mulein

Hannah is a true Zebra—a term deeply embraced by the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and rare disease communities because medical students are traditionally taught, “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.”

  • The Journey: Her path to answers took years of fighting through systemic medical gaslighting before finally securing her EDS validation.
  • Clinical Profile: Alongside Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she actively manages Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a chronic autoimmune thyroid condition.

Jessica Mulein

Jessica is a proud Unicorn—the official mascot embraced by the thyroid cancer community, representing the strength and rarity of those navigating complex oncological paths.

  • The Journey: She represents the rare fraction of patients living with, and actively managing, iodine-refractory metastatic papillary thyroid cancer.
  • Clinical Profile: Jessica also managed Hashimoto’s thyroiditis prior to undergoing a total thyroidectomy.
